50c769d25ffa0_Ancalagon_LOTR Poster_thumb

The three actors that are identified are Elijah Wood (Frodo), Viggo Mortensen (Aragon), and Orlando Bloom (Legolas).

Viggo Mortensen would fall under the actor category of the character actor.

Orlando Bloom falls under the category of a character actor.

Elijah Wood would be classified as a character actor.

Viggo Mortensen is classified as a character actor because of his many diverse roles he has played throughout his career. He has played in movies such as The Road (2009), which he plays a father in a post apocalyptic world trying to save his son. This is an adventure/drama movie genre. He also has played in Hidalgo (2004), where he has a horse and travels to Arabia to join a cross desert horse race. he is portrayed as a cowboy. This is an action, adventure, western type of film. He then plays the role of a Ranger in the movie LOTR- The Fellowship of the Ring. He then plays Aragon which is the heir to the throne of Gondor.

Orlando Bloom is classified as a character actor because of his diverse roles he has played throughout his career. He has played in Kingdom of Heaven (2005). He played the part of a traveler without an understanding of who or what he was traveling to Jerusalem and finding himself as a leader of a city and the people. He’s also played in the movie The Pirates of The Carribean (2003). His role as a blacksmith who tries to go with Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) to find his true love. In the film LOTR-The fellowship of the Ring he plays an elf (Legolas), who is determined to help Frodo destroy the ring and battle against the evil armies of Sauron.

Elijah Wood as a character actor has done many diverse rolls of film in his career. He play a hobbit in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, but has many other roles in different genres of movies throughout his career. He has played a role in The Oxford Murders(2008), in this movie plays a graduate student who is trying to solve murders with his professor. This is a crime, mystery, thriller movie. Another movie he has played in that has a different role is Happy Feet (2006), where he is the voice of a penguin who is trying to find his place in his penguin society but can’t sing. he is an outcast because all he does is dance. this is an animation, comedy, family genre of film. In the movie Fellowship of the Ring, he plays the role of a hobbit, a fantasy character. He is trying to get to Mordor to Mount Doom to destroy the ring.

Viggo Mortensen has played many different styles of movies. Taking a lead role and smaller roles in certain films. I would consider always calling him a character actor because of his diversity in the roles he’s played. he has played in many different types of movie genres throughout his career. He has starred in movies with many different directors and has had much success in his acting career by being diverse and able to change his character for each role he has played in. This puts the actor into a category that most actors portray. Being a character actor, he can cast any films he would like. He is a star in Hollywood’s terms. Being able to switch roles and different types of characters for different types of movie has made him the successful actor he is known as today.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Movie Review (Sound)

download

Sound for the Fellowship Of the Ring

The three basic categories for sound are, dialogue, sound effects, and music.

Dialogue is basically having characters talk to each other in the movie. Goodykoontz and Jacobs tells us, “there are three basic reasons to use dialogue: To further the development of the plot,to enhance characterization, and to establish very quickly important information the audience needs to know to understand the action” Goodykoontz & jacobs, 2014).

Sound Effects are sounds of different noises that enhance the film and give the viewers the ability to understand what is taking place in the movie. Explosions, animals making noises, cars, these are a few examples of sounds in a movie.

Music is a way to give a sound to bring the movie to life. It goes with the films actions, emotions, music to scare the audience. Music is used to help give the viewers a sense of what is going on in the movie at any given time.

All three of the basic sounds are used throughout this film to help with the mood and tells us the story of what is going on and what is happening with the certain scenes. The music in this film goes along with the emotions of the film. Giving the film different emotions and views depending on the scene. Music gives feeling to a movie and action and excitement. It helps with the theme and mood of the story.

Effective Lighting: The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring

The film Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, uses the traditional three-point style of lighting throughout the movie. The major scenes in the movie that set up what the movie is about and the different editing with the lighting that goes on with the movie in different parts of the movie draw the audience in, but at the same time shows throughout the different kinds of lighting used as well. Sometimes the lighting in the background uses the third part of the three-point lighting scheme. When using this it shows the characters as Goodykoontz and Jacobs say, “The reason is that the bright rim of light visible from the camera position (sometimes called rimlight) makes the actors “pop-out” from the background” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014). This will make the people watching the movie see the character more than its background. In this scene, Gandalf bids a goodbye to Bilbo and Gandalf has to become a giant of a character showing him with the rimlighting as he talks to Bilbo. This also shows a little bit of underlighting as well. It gives Gandalfs character a scary look as we see Bilbo becoming terrified of Gandalf.

The benefits of this style of lighting is what makes the scene I used as an example forthcoming. It provides us as viewers with the sense of a power and a fear needed to get a certain point across to Bilbo. There are so many different scenes in this movie that are only going to show the audience how it will effect the different types of mood of the characters within the theme that it is trying to portray. The benefit of the three-point lighting is needed to bring to the audience meanings to different aspects of the movie. It brings the audience an emotion towards the characters as well as the evil that is trying to destroy Middle Earth and  we also see the greatness of good trying to overcome the evil that surrounds them at the same time.

The technique used in the lighting contributed to the film in a huge way. The way the cinematographer had to use the different angles of the cameras to get certain shots he needed to bring the scenes and the story together. The different angles the cameras take, affects the lighting and the shots that the director wants for the film.

The three-point lighting is suited to be used all over the film and has different uses for the shots on the scenes that are being brought to the audience. The bright key light as well as the fill light is used all over this film to help the audience try to feel the emotion and excitement they are trying to portray throughout the movie, with each character having his or her own fight. Whether it be an inside battle the character is facing or the problems being solved by the characters with each shot and take this technique and style of lighting helps the whole movie come together with meaning and emotion. It shows the style the movie is trying to get across to the viewers. If any other lighting technique that is used, would not help you understand what is going on within the movie or how it is being played out.

If there was any different style of lighting used on this scene portraying Gandalf becoming a larger more scarier character at the single most important part of this scene to help the viewers understand the importance of what is going on. If you used the high-key lighting, it would have taken away the emotion and fear of the scene the cinematographer was trying to portray during this certain scene. Not having a shadow effect as well as back lighting, the scene would not be able to make the scene feel an emotion of fear and yet caring in the end.

Plot: Frodo Baggins lives in the Shire. His Uncle Bilbo Baggins is getting ready to celebrate 111th birthday and invites all Hobbits from the Shire. he gives a speech and then suddenly disappears. The Wizard Gandolf suspects something ad meets Bilbo in his house. They talk about the ring and before Bilbo leaves on another adventure he drops the ring and leaves it to Frodo. Gandolf tries to touch the ring but sees an evil eye. Frodo comes into the house looking for Bilbo and he sees Gandolf. Gandolf gives Frodo the ring in an envelope and tells him to keep it safe and a secret while he goes and does some studying on the ring. Gandolf returns to Frodo in the Shire and throws the ring into the fire, asks Frodo if he sees anything and then there are words in an ancient writing that appear on the ring. Gandolf tells Frodo he must get out of the Shire and take the ring to the Prancing Pony Inn. He would meet him there. Gandolf never shows but a Ranger is in the shadows watching Frodo and the three other Hobbits that have come along with him. They get to the Prancing Pony but not before Evil Black Riders are chasing them to get the ring from Frodo.

While at the Prancing Pony Frodo comes across a Ranger who goes by the name Strider. Strider watches Frodo and the other Hobbits. During this time Frodo gets up and walks towards the bar and stumbles and falls nd the ring pops out of his coat and onto his finger. He suddenly disappears ad the Black Riders see where Frodo is and that he has the ring. he takes the ring off and Strider picks him up and races up the stairs into a room and talks to Frodo about the ring and the Evil Black Riders that are following him and the rest of the Hobbits. The other three hobbits find Strider with Frodo and Strider then again explains what is going on to them all being chased. Strider takes the four Hobbits to another Inn and waits as he watches the Black Riders enter the Prancing Pony and try to kill the Hobbits. The riders go to their room and try and kill the Hobbits. They come to find out that the Hobbits are not there and furiously ride off into the night.

The Next day Strider and the Hobbits leave and leave for Rivendell, where the Elvish people live. On their journey they encounter the Black Riders again and this time when Frodo puts the ring on he sees them as well as thy see him. He gets stabbed in the chest and is beginning to slowly die into another realm. Arwin an Elvish women finds them and takes Frodo to Rivendell her homeland. The Black Riders follow her to Rivendell as they are chasing her, she reaches her homeland and Frodo then passes and Arwin says some words and asks that everything she has, be given to Frodo.

Frodo survives and the Hobbits come to him and see that he is alright. He sees Gandolf and asks him what happened. Gandolf tells Frodo and then the call for all who live in Middle Earth send a messenger from the different parts of Middle Earth, to speak for their areas on behalf of what to do with the ring. Elrond and Gandolf speak before the council is gathered and Elrond the Chief Elf of Rivendell tells Gandolf the ring will not stay In Rivendell, that it must be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom. Then the council gathers to discuss the what to do with the ring. They all begin to argue and then shortly there after Frodo stands up and tells them that he will take it. He tells them that he needs the help from whomever will come with him. Thus beginning the Fellowship of The Ring.

All seven of them set off on their journey to Mordor to destroy the ring. Strider the Ranger, also known as Argon, Boromir and the four hobbits, Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and merry. Gimli the Dwarf, and Legolas the Elf. Along the way they come upon Galadriel The Elf Queen of power and wisdom, talks with each one of the fellowship. She talks to Frodo later at night while everyone was sleeping. She shows Frodo things that will come to pass in Middle Earth if he does not destroy the ring.

The journey begins in the morning and the seven ride off on there way to Mordor. Saruman another Wizard sends Orcs to track down the seven and destroy them except for the Hobbits. When they were resting on the land they crossed to, Frodo is found by Boromir a man from Ministirith a land of men. He tries to take the ring from Frodo and Frodo tries to run away. He gets away and finds Aragon and tries to give him the ring. ragon looks at Frodo and tells him he knows he has to continue the journey alone. Sam comes with Frodo and they cross the river to the other side on their own personal Journey to get to Mordor. Orcs find their camp and attack, Boromir dies during the battle and the Orcs take off with two of the Hobbits, Pippin and Merry. Sam and Frodo begin their journey to Mordor and the rest of them try to track down the Orcs who took Merry and Pippin.

Chronology: This film is brought to us chronologically. It tells the story of how everything comes together one piece at a time. The birthday of Bilbo, the ring falling into Frodo’s hands and so on. The movie tells the story fluidly and it all comes together in the end with everyone having to take their own journey.

The effect this had on the audience as quite taking. It told us a story of how one ring could do so much damage and destruction it brought together a group of people and sent them on a journey to save everyone in Middle Earth.

Elements:The elements of the movie with the characters being brought together in order of the way the movie went. Introducing Gandolf the Wizard, to Frodo, to Bilbo, and how all the rest of the characters fell into place as the movie progressed further. Their was a little foreshadowing  the movie when Frodo was talking with the Elf Queen and showing him what would come to pass. This showed whether Frodo would choose to take what path that he knew he had to do.

Different Presentation: If the movie did not follow the chronological way, the audience would be lost as to what was happening in the movie. If the movie didn’t follow a certain order the audience wouldn’t know what the story was going to be about and how it would end. They wouldn’t get to know the characters in the movie, or what the plot was all about. The story would not have gone in a direction that would allow it to come to an ending the way the movie did.
